James W. Schottel, Jr.
- Lead attorney of Schottel & Associates, P.C., James Schottel, Jr., was born and raised in the City of St. Louis. An athlete growing up, Mr. Schottel excelled in football and soccer. Although both of these are fall sports and played at the same time, Mr. Schottel received approval from coaches and the St. Mary's High School's Administration to play both sports at the same time; the first player in St. Mary's High School history to play two major sports at the same time. A standout kicker in football, Mr. Schottel went to a small college in Kansas, Baker University, on a partial scholarship. Mr. Schottel won the starting kicker position as a freshman. In his first season, Baker went 10-2, losing in the NAIA semifinals 27-3, with Mr. Schottel scoring the team's only points, a 44-yard field goal that tied a Baker University football record for longest field goal in a playoff game.
- Following his 1st college football season, Mr. Schottel was pledging a fraternity and was paralyzed from the neck down in a fraternity hazing on March 2, 1991. Through hard work and dedication, Mr. Schottel was in therapy, both inpatient and outpatient for a year and a half in St. Louis. Determined to move on, Mr. Schottel re-enrolled in college at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (SIUE) in the fall of 1992. In 1996, Mr. Schottel received his B.S. degree in Mathematics.
- Following his 1st college football season, Mr. Schottel was pledging a fraternity and was paralyzed from the neck down in a fraternity hazing on March 2, 1991. - Leaving his options open, Mr. Schottel had goals of going to law school and ultimately becoming an NFL Agent or teaching High School Math and coaching football. After applying to several law schools, Mr. Schottel was given notice he was placed on a law school's waiting list until one day he received a letter in the mail from St. Louis University School of Law, his law school top choice, made opening an envelope a nervous occasion. The letter notified Mr. Schottel that he had been accepted into St. Louis School of Law.
- Mr. Schottel began law school in the fall of 1996 and obtained his Juris Doctor (JD) in 1999. During law school, The Montel Williams Show was planning a show on Hazing and was interested in Mr. Schottel's story. In the middle of Mr. Schottel's 1st year of law school, The Montel Williams Show flew him to New York to appear on the show where he discussed hazing and his own personal experience.
- Immediately after law school, Mr. Schottel worked for the late, high-profile civil rights attorney, Eric Vickers. Working primarily on civil rights cases, Mr. Schottel worked on a large case involving discrimination against minority contract workers in being hired for government jobs. Here in St. Louis, Mr. Vickers held a demonstration, alongside Reverend Al Sharpton, to bring attention to this discrimination issue.
- Mr. Schottel enjoyed his time with Mr. Vickers and the experience he gained. However, he had other career goals in mind. In January of 2000, Mr. Schottel approached Mr. Vickers and let him know he was ready to go out on his own; Mr. Schottel worked heavily on 5 cases in litigation and asked Mr. Vickers, if the client consented, could he take those 5 cases to begin his own practice. Mr. Vickers approved, the clients' consented and on May 1, 2000, Schottel & Associates, P.C. was formed and opened; reaching a 24-year anniversary this past May.
